野玫瑰 YE MEIGUI (WILD ROSE)
Shanghai 1932, 70’
Written and Directed by Sun Yu
Silent with Chinese & English intertitles

Written and directed by Sun Yu, one of the pioneers of Chinese cinema, the film features Wang Renmei "the wildcat of Shanghai" in one of her most famous roles. Set against the backdrop of Shanghai, Wild Rose approaches the political, social, and artistic upheaval of life in 1930s China. As in many Shanghai films of the 1930s, the city is the backdrop against which contradictions between East and West, rich and poor, rural and urban, progressives and reactionaries become evident.
