Gary Xu is Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures, LAS Global Studies, the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies and the Center for Global Studies at the University of Illinois, where he currently serves as Head of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. Gary Xu has extensive work experience as a scholar, author, translator, art curator, and teacher of both graduate and undergraduate students. His areas of research include Chinese art, cinema and literature, and he is the winner of the 2008 Ray and Pat Brown Award for Best Reference/Primary Source Collection in Popular and American Culture.

Associate Professor Gary Xu was cordially invited by Professor Irmy Schweiger of Stockholm University to stay with us as a visiting scholar and to take part in the literary studies workshop of the Faculty of Humanities: “Where Has the Aura Gone? Neoliberalism and Literary Production” as well as a workshop on theory application in non-European literature with a talk “Left or Right? How Progressive Theoretical Thinking is Misunderstood and Reappropriated in Contemporary China".
