Abstract:

This series of seminars will focus on studies from South Asia. The literature and culture of South Asian nations is closely related and has a common past which makes it very interesting study in the present. I offer to take up the past as a point of departure in order to understand the present of these newly born nations since all of these nations have born in 20th century. The prose (fiction and non-fiction), poetry , drama and cultural studies will foreground the rootedness of the present day literature. My seminars aim to introduce, familiarize and sensitize with the concerns and issues that have remain at the core or the people and their lives in this part of the world through a discussion of select pieces and examples. The seminars will also provide an exposure to the style of writing and expressing that make the South Asian works distinct in their own right. A brief writing exercise will also be taken up in the seminars to initiate the students into critiquing the texts with the backdrop of postcolonial paradigms that hold significance for this region.
