| Climate changes shall inexorably be accompanied by strong migratory movements in the years to come. Human societies could encounter a state of mobility which they have not experienced for a long time. The arrival of refugees may trigger hopes but also many fears, sometimes combined with display of reluctance. Liliam Thuram and Johan Kuylenstierna will exchange views on how human societies can meet this challenge through anticipating those tendencies. |
| Lilian Thuram and Johan Kuylenstierna will be two doctor honoris causa from Stockholm University. Lilian Thuram was a former international soccer player from France. He created a foundation to fight against racial discriminations. Johan Kuylenstierna is the head of Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). SEI is an international research organization focusing on environment/development research for sustainable development and bridging science-policy-action. Both Lilian Thuram and Johan Kuylenstierna highlight the importance of early education to confront with the strongest challenges such as the climate change. The question of refugees and migrations is prevailing in the political agendas and discussions. What can be the effects of such migrations? How can we avoid new forms of discrimination? Lilian Thuram and Johan Kuylenstierna will share their experience and knowledge to discuss this topics”. |
Lilian Thuram was part of the French national football team that won the 1998 World Cup and European Championship 2000. He has played for big clubs like Parma, Juventus and FC Barcelona. Already as a footballer he got involved against racism and other forms of discrimination. When a heart defect stopped the football career he started the Lilian Thuram Foundation, "Education against Racism". Nowadays he travels around the world to stimulate debate and create dialogue about these issues and has on several occasions visited Sweden and Stockholm University. His motto is "One is not born a racist - you get it."
Johan Kuylenstierna is Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). SEI is an international research organization focusing on environment/development research for sustainable development and bridging science-policy-action. It has about 220 employees in 9 offices in 6 countries. Johan has previously held positions with the UN system (UNDESA at the UN HQ in NY, WMO in Geneva and FAO in Rome) and has also worked many years at the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). He has also a background as a consultant focusing on sustainability and corporate core value processes within both the private and public sector. His academic background is Earth Sciences and his research focused on palaeoclimatology in the Polar Regions. He currently holds an adjunct professorship in international water resources at the Stockholm University.
