Insect physiology and innate immunity

The innate immune response against tumors: In this project you will test whether mutants in immune genes affect the size of tumors. Our model system is the vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster and we have established two tumor models in the fly. We have observed that the tumors induce certain types of immune responses and you will test the effect of these responses.

pre-mRNA processing

Förstadier till mRNA, pre-mRNA måste genomgå omfattande mognadssteg i cellkärnan innan de transporteras till cytoplasman och kan translateras. Dessa mognadssteg är modifiering av 5´-änden, s.k. capping, modifiering av 3´-änden, klyvning och polyadenylering samt hopfogning av exoner, splitsning. Samtliga processer är grundläggande steg i genexpressionen i eukaryota celler och är dessutom viktiga för reglering av genexpressionen. Vi studerar de två senare mognadsstegen och försöker förstå hur de sker i den intakta cellkärnan. Inom projekten används hybrid-DNA tekniker, expression av fusionsproteiner, proteinrening, framtagning av antikroppar, mikroinjektion i cellkärnor, immunhistokemi och konfokalmikroskopi.
