PhD studies are offered at the Wenner-Gren Institute in cell biology, developmental biology, immunology and physiology. PhD positions in these subjects are announced four times a year on the web-page of the Wenner-Gren Institute, on the web-page of Stockholm University, and twice a year in the Swedish newspapers. Information regarding available projects are included in the announcements.
PhD students are accepted to conduct research studies within a project run by a principal investigator heading an independent research group. The Wenner-Gren Institute Board appoints PhD students at the institute. The formal requirements are defined in the study plan for each subject. Courses in biology, molecular biology, chemistry or other relevant subjects, and an independent degree project (“examensarbete”), are required for admission in all subjects. In summary, prospective students are minimally expected to have obtained 240 credits (including 60 credits at an advanced level) – equivalent to 4 years of full time study.
PhD studies at The Wenner-Gren Institute normally requires 4 years to complete, primarily consisting of full-time experimental research. It is obligatory at The Wenner-Gren Institute to take a licentiate degree half-way through a PhD. Most PhD students also participate in undergraduate teaching, or carry out administrative work at the Institute or University (a maximum of 20% of time), thereby prolonging their post-graduate education up to an additional year.
Financial support for the entire period of PhD studies is offered by the Institute to cover the student’s salary: students receive an education bursary (“utbildningsbidrag”) prior to obtaining a Licentiate; afterwards, students are remunerated as a salaried PhD position (“
doktorandtjänst”). There are no tuition fees for PhD studies in Sweden. For more information about studies in Sweden see: www.studyinsweden.se
For more complete information about the application procedure, prospective students are encouraged to directly contact the principal investigators working in the research field of interest. More information about PhD studies is available in the
SU's PhD handbook (In Swedish),
Guide for research students (in English).
