The sea
The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth surface. There is a wealth of environments from Arctic sea ice, Baltic archipelagos and tidal plains along the coasts of Europe, to tropical coral reefs and deep trenches that are far deeper than Mount Everest is high. There are also vast ocean expanses where the majority of marine production occurs, but still sometimes called 'marine deserts'. In this diverse environment a very rich and diverse flora and fauna occurs, that in different ways have adapted to the variable environments. Knowledge about the processes in the oceans and the factors affecting them is a prerequisite for a broad understanding of global ecology and environment. Our department carries out both basic and applied research on marine organisms and environments. Given Stockholm's geographic location, our marine research has a focus on the Baltic Sea, but we also conduct extensive research on the Swedish west coast and in the tropical coastal regions of Africa, Central America and Southeast Asia.Information will soon be available.
