Where is Stockholm University?
The main Stockholm University campus, known as Frescati, is situated north of the city centre. A small number of departments are located outside of the main campus. These include the Department of Cinema Studies, the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMK), the IT University (in collaboration with The Royal Institute of Technology) and Campus Konradsberg where some parts of Teacher Education are currently located. What does it cost to Study at Stockholm University?
Tuition is free for citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland. Applicants from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland are required to pay both application- and tuition fees. For more information see: www.su.se/english/study/fees

Are there scholarships available to students?
The scholarship scheme at Stockholm University is aimed at especially qualified students coming from countries outside of EU/EEA/Switzerland and who are required to pay tuition fees for studies commencing after June 2011.

Please note that only scholarship applications from students admitted for a Master's programme commencing in the autumn semester at Stockholm University will be considered. Priority will be given to students with Stockholm University as their first choice in the national application rounds. Please see www.universityadmissions.se for more information concerning fees.

Stockholm University scholarships cover tuition fees only, which means that students will need to cover their own living costs. For more information on living costs, please see http://www.su.se/english/study/application-admissions/costs-and-funding.

How do I apply for a PhD position at Stockholm University?
If you wish to start at postgraduate level towards a PhD degree (and you meet all the requirements decided by the department concerned), Swedish language skills are not necessarily a requirement, but definitely an advantage. You will however need to be fluent in English. Please contact the department where you hold your major, and they will give you further information.

How many students are there at Stockholm University? 
There are approximately 50,000 undergraduate students registered at Stockholm University (approximately 27,500 full-time) and around 1,800 PhD students. More detailed information on student numbers and other facts can be found in the article entitled Facts and figures.

When was Stockholm University founded?
Activities at Stockholm University College, which in 1960 became Stockholm University, began on a limited scale with a series of lectures in mathematics, physics, chemistry and geology in the autumn of 1878. In 1904 Stockholm University College was given the right to award degrees and the first PhD was awarded in 1906.

In 1970 the University began the move to the campus at Frescati, north of the city. Today the majority of the University’s departments, teacher training, the central administration and the library are located in the Frescati campus area, which extends from Sveaplan in the south to the Bergius Botanic Garden in the north. In 2008 the Stockholm Institute of Education became a part of Stockholm University, with the result that Stockholm University became Sweden’s largest university, with over 50,000 students.
