Information on the new influenza
The new influenza, now known as influenza A(H1N1), and previously known as swine flu or swine influenza, can spread easily between people. Stockholm University has decided to contract to vaccinate University staff against swine flu. Students at the university will also be offered vaccination.
Infective disease experts believe the new form of influenza, known as swine flu, could be more widespread than normal annual outbreaks of influenza. For this reason, certain public functions are expected to be more strongly affected than by a normal flu outbreak. The Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet), the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) and other authorities active within this field recommend that as many people as possible are vaccinated against swine flu.
Stockholm University has decided to contract health service company Avonova to vaccinate University staff against swine flu. Vaccination will take place during working hours on the University campus.
Staff covered by the vaccination programme: Monthly salaried employees and doctoral students, regardless of funding category.
NB: Hourly paid staff are not covered.
When?
Vaccination will take place in weeks 47-49. (Provided that the vaccine can be obtained via the Stockholm County Council.)
In order to keep waiting times to a minimum and spread attendance evenly between the locations, the University has produced a vaccination schedule based on month of birth. Staff born in January and February will be vaccinated on certain dates, staff born in March and April will be vaccinated on other dates and so on.
To avoid queues and to prevent wasting opened vaccine doses, it is important that you attend vaccination at the times designated for your month of birth.
Allocation of vaccination times is shown below.
Where?
Vaccination will take place at four locations:
1) Frescati, fourth floor of the F building, Södra huset, Room F 4204
2) Konradsberg, Building H, room H3:24
3) Sveaplan, 2nd floor, Room 218
4) Kista, Forumhuset, 6 th floor, elevator A, relaxation room
Staff at other workplaces within the University should come to one of the above vaccination locations. Medical staff from Avonova will perform the vaccination and are medically responsible for it.
Go to your nearest vaccination location according to the schedule below. You do not need to book an appointment. This means you may have to wait when you go for vaccination.
NB: High-risk groups and pregnant women should get vaccinated directly at their local health centre (see below).
How?
- To make the process as simple as possible, please print and fill out the health declaration before you are vaccinated. You can obtain the form here.
- Fill out the form and bring it with you to the vaccination.
- You must bring some form of identification with you.
If a second vaccination is required, a new vaccination date will be arranged and you will subsequently be advised. We do not currently know whether a second round of vaccinations will be necessary. If it is, new vaccination dates will be arranged. The University will follow the recommendations of the National Board of Health and Welfare.
The offer of vaccination does not prevent you from being vaccinated at your local health centre if you so wish.
Pregnant women and high-risk groups
Anyone in one of the high-risk groups specified by Socialstyrelsen should contact their local health centre for vaccination as soon as possible. Vaccination of these groups started in week 42 in the Stockholm region. Vaccination will only be performed at health centres and midwife centres. Go to vårdguiden.se to see which centres have vaccine available and their opening times: www.vardguiden.se/Hitta-vard-och-omsorg/Hitta-vard-och omsorg/?q=&bn=1&locality=&so=Vaccin&desc=True&ct=Vaccination+svininfluensan
Vaccination of students
Students at Stockholm University will also be offered vaccination. Between 14th - 16th December, VaccinDirekt will provide vaccination at Frescati between 8.30 and 17.30. The vaccination will take place on the 4th floor of the B building, Södra huset, Room B4117-20. Student vaccination may also be given in week 3.
Vaccination is free of charge for students and administered by healthcare personnel. Students will be required to fill out a health declaration and must have some form of identification with them when attending vaccination. Anyone wishing to be vaccinated earlier should contact their local health centre.

Stockholm County Council has initiated vaccination against influenza can be initiated. Those at risk of becoming seriously ill from the new flu, such as those with certain chronic diseases, are to be offered the vaccination first. According to a decision made by the County Council, the vaccination against influenza is to be offered free of charge to patients. The offer applies to all who live and reside permanently in Stockholm County.
Students registered outside Stockholm county
The County Council will not charge other county councils for the cost of vaccinating patients from other counties. This means that the vaccination will also be free to people living in Stockholm County but registered elsewhere.
Foreign students, researchers and teachers
People from other countries who are permanent residents in Stockholm County will not have to pay for the vaccination against influenza. This category includes, for example, foreign students and visiting scientists.
