Stockholm - European Green Capital 2010
The Swedish capital is to be the first European Green Capital in 2010, it was announced yesterday. The European Commission, which has conceived the European Green Capital Award as a way of promoting and rewarding the environmental initiatives of local authorities, announced the first award winners at a ceremony in Brussels on 23 February 2009.
According to the European Commission's webpage, the European Commission conceived the European Green Capital Award as an initiative to promote and reward the efforts made by local authorities in improving the environment, and "to showcase and encourage exchange of best practice among European cities."
The first award winners were announced at the awards ceremony which took place in Brussels on 23 February 2009. The first European Green Capitals will be Stockholm in 2010 followed by Hamburg in 2011.
The Commission explained its decision with reference to the environmental policies and goals of Stockholm City Council as well as the changes that have been implemented since 2006. More information on the Commission's decision is available here:
