Stockholm researchers contribute to important UK health inequality report

A new report on health inequalities in Britain, "Fair Societies, Healthy Lives: The Marmot Review", was published on February 11, 2010. The report, which was presented at a conference in London, offers recommendations for the reduction of health inequalities and is based on an extensive review of evidence and policies in England today. Professors Denny Vågerö and Olle Lundberg from Stockholm University's Centre for Health Equity Studies (CHESS) have been actively involved in work on this report.

The report demonstrates that inequalities in health often form a gradient, with stepwise differences in health between for example educational groups. These inequalities in health are the result of social inequalities across a range of social determinants. In order to reduce the social gradient in health, actions for change needs to be universal and not only directed to the most disadvantaged.

The report suggests that actions on six policy objectives are needed:

  1. Give every child the best start in life
  2. Enable all children, young people and adults to maximise their capabilities and have control over their lives
  3. Create fair employment and good work for all
  4. Ensure healthy standard of living for all
  5. Create and develop healthy and sustainable places and communities
  6. Strengthen the role and impact of ill health prevention

"The specific suggestions for action involve central and local government, as well as private and third sectors and community groups. While the review of evidence and specific policy recommendations are specific for England, the report will be important for the Swedish and European health policy agenda," says Olle Lundberg, professor and Director at CHESS. "The report produced by the Marmot Review is a challenging example but also a solid basis to build on for other countries and regions in Europe. While there are certainly differences in both health inequalities and policies between Sweden and England, several basic relationships between social determinants, health and health inequalities are the same."

Health inequalities to be reviewed on Europe-wide basis
On the same day that the Marmot Review was presented, the WHO Regional Office in Europe appointed a commission, consisting of scientists and politicians, whose purpose is to create an overview of the social determinants of health in Europe. The chairman of the commission will also be Michael Marmot. The starting point for this work will be the gaps in health equality in Europe, both between and within countries. The work is a part of WHO's new strategic orientation for 2010-2012.
