The ranking, which includes data on 48 countries, was published on 11 May by Universitas 21, a global network of 23 research intensive universities.

The new rankings are different in that they rate countries’ overall higher education systems, rather than that of specific universities. The rankings were produced by researchers at the University of Melbourne who looked at indicators such as investment, research and its impact, international collaboration, diversity and participation opportunities.

The results were launched at an event at Lund University in Sweden where the ranking system was described as a “benchmark for governments, education institutions and individuals”. Behind the US and Sweden, Canada, Finland, and Denmark complete the top five positions.
