Growyn – a new green search engine

The new search engine Growyn donates profits to national and international environmental projects. The service, which is the first of its kind, is ad-funded and revenue is generated though conventional web searches at growyn.com – the more people search, the more money is generated for the environment.

Founders David Johansson and Kurdi Rad have developed Growyn in collaboration with SU Innovation, a company run by Stockholm University, which supports researchers and students in starting businesses. Over the past year, they have established a wide network of contacts within the environmental industry and developed the technical solution now being launched.

"Those using growyn.com as a search engine are involved in an ongoing charitable activity that automatically contributes money towards improving the environment, without costing a thing," says David Johansson.

Growyn works the same way as other search engines, with money generated through sponsored links. But unlike other players in the market Growyn places all of its profits within selected environmental projects.

"The search engine industry generates incredibly large revenues. Our hope is, within the near future, to take over a few percent of the market," says Kurdi Rad.

Growyn works with some of the Sweden's leading organisations in the environmental field, including the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC), Albaeco, Stockholm Resilience Centre and several departments at Stockholm University. The next step is to start an environmental portal, where high-profile bloggers write on environmental issues, alongside a wide range of searchable environment-related information.

In order to select which projects Growyn will support, they will consult a number of independent environmental experts. Growyn have established connections with experts in the areas of water, energy, environmental pollution and climate issues. The consultants come from the UN, the EU and Swedish government authorities.
