The Nobel Prize, awarded each year since 1901, is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. The Nobel Prize is known throughout the world as a symbol of extraordinary achievement. Four researchers from Stockholm University have received the Nobel Prize and a fifth has been awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

A number of professors at Stockholm University were awarded H.M. The King's Medal for significant contributions to Swedish research during 2011., including Professor Brita Bergman of the Department of Linguistics and Professor Lars Bergström, Director of the Oskar Klein Centre.

The awarding of an honorary doctorate is an expression of the University's appreciation of outstanding contributions in one or more of the University's areas of academic activity.
