Historical studies is a field of research encompassing many disciplines focusing on, for example, what is used, changed, and passed down in the interaction between people. The proximity to national museums and institutions in the region provides access to empirical data and opportunities for collaboration with the surrounding community. The underlying mechanisms of various development trends and patterns are studied from an economic perspective. Medieval research and studies of the early modern period are particularly strong areas that have received large external grants. Research projects in archaeology, economic history, ethnology, history of ideas, human geography, media studies, pedagogy, and the aesthetic disciplines focus on the study of immaterial legacies and artefacts involved in meaning-making processes in different communities. Connections in the development of methods and theory – such as visual studies in art history – create opportunities for joint activities and the exchange of ideas between faculties.
