This profile area studies population changes as a result of transnational migration in both the past and the present. Multilingualism is included as a consequence of migration. The research includes studies of the economic, social, and environmental impact of globalisation in terms of the flow of information, goods, and people, as well as the infrastructure and networks that are constructed as a result. The research thus involves a wide range of national and global population issues, and is conducted in the fields of history, human geography, language/multilingualism, law, pedagogy, social anthropology, sociology, etc. Common conceptions about these processes are studied within media and cinema studies. Research in this area has received several large grants and involves many national and international outreach activities, as well as collaboration with a number of national and international organisations.
