If you have a residence permit for studies at a university or other higher education institution in Sweden and have completed your studies, you can get a residence permit to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business here. You must apply for a residence permit while you are still in Sweden and before your current permit for studies expires.

Requirements for a residence permit

To get a residence permit you have to:

  • have a passport that is valid for the whole of the period you intend to be in Sweden
  • have had a residence permit for higher education that has lasted for at least two terms
  • have completed your studies
  • apply for a residence permit while you are still in Sweden and before your residence permit for studies expires
  • plan to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business
  • be able to support yourself during the period you will be in Sweden
  • have full health insurance if you are not registered in the population register in Sweden.

If your passport is about to expire, you should renew it as you cannot obtain a permit for longer than the validity of your passport.

You can get a residence permit that is valid for up to six months.

You must be able to support yourself

The support requirement is at present a minimum of SEK 8,010 per month.

You must show that you have funds for the whole of the period you intend to be in Sweden. You must show that you have your support secured by means of verification of your own bank assets, a scholarship or similar means of support, such as a study grant from your home country.

Your own bank assets are money in an account that belongs to you and from which only you and, if any, your spouse can withdraw money. It cannot be considered as your own assets if you share the account with, for example, your parents or a relative. Nor does the Migration Agency accept that a sponsor (such as a relative or a company) covers your support while you are in Sweden, unless the funds are deposited into your own account.

Insurance is required if you are not registered

If you are not registered in the population register you need to have a full health insurance valid in Sweden. The insurance must be valid for the whole period that you will stay in Sweden, and must cover the costs for emergency and other medical care, dental care and hospitalization. The insurance must also cover the cost of a possible return journey home because of medical reasons.

If you get a job in Sweden

If you have been given a residence permit to seek employment in Sweden, you can work during the period when your residence permit is valid. If you are offered a permanent job, you can apply for a work permit in Sweden.
