"My first year here in Sweden was very, very busy but incredibly fulfilling! The first eight months consisted of the core courses for the program which really opened my eyes to the research going on at the Stockholm Resilience Centre, and got me thinking about what I really want to do not only for my thesis, but for my future career. I had the opportunity to take some of the concepts and ideas learned at the Resilience Centre and apply them back home in the US via a traineeship I completed with a fishing company back home in Boston, which was an incredibly valuable learning experience. I've now returned to Sweden to start the second year of my program, during which I will carry out my own research project for my Master's thesis. My project -- linked with ongoing work at the Resilience Centre -- will explore the relationship between ecosystem services (the benefits provided by ecosystems) and human wellbeing within the context of marine protected areas in Mombasa, Kenya. Additionally, when I return to Stockholm after my field season, I hope to get more involved with other projects at the Resilience Centre and learn as much as I can before I graduate in June!"
