Research

Membrane-Bound Energy Transducers

Ion-translocating integral membrane proteins are involved in a wide range of functions in living cells such as signal transduction, energy conversion and nerve conduction. Because many of these proteins share common structural elements and mechanistic properties, a shortcut to understanding their function at the molecular level is to find general concepts to describe them. More specifically, our studies involve the use of a broad range of biochemical and biophysical techniques to investigate the structure and function of membrane proteins involved in electron and proton transport. In addition, we investigate the role of the membrane in providing functional connectivity between membrane-bound proton transporters.

 

Architecture and Functional Dynamics of the Cellular Power Plant

A project that involves five groups at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Mitochondria harbour the energy-conversion machinery of living cells, which in part involves a system of molecular machines, the respiratory chain complexes. These complexes are organized in large oligomeric assemblies termed supercomplexes. Dysfunction of these machineries underlies many human disorders and aging. In the frame of a five-year project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, we aim to unravel functional principles of electron and proton-transport mechanisms in mitochondria and link these phenomena to cellular organization, molecular structure and physiology.
