Daniel Pettersson
About me
Daniel Pettersson has taught Latin (beginner to advanced) at the Department of Romance Studies and Classics. He is currently researching language teaching and learning in the 16th-century Latin school dialogue genre. He is an internationally known proponent of speaking Latin in the classroom as a pedagogical tool to improve teaching and facilitate the acquisition of the language. To promote the study of Latin and the use of the language in the classroom, he founded Latinitium.com, where he publishes guides on teaching and learning Latin, as well as recordings of Latin texts and video lessons in Latin.
Teaching
As a Latin teacher, Daniel Pettersson places great importance on incorporating findings from research in the field of second language acquisition, in order to render classes more enjoyable but more importantly more effective. A central aspect of his pedagogical view is the active use of Latin communicatively in the classroom, but not to the exclusion of other methods, but rather in conjunction to create a wide and rich classroom experience for the modern student of Latin.
Research
His current research for his dissertation focuses on language teaching and learning in the 16th-century Latin school dialogues (also known as Colloquia). He has previously worked with Latin travel itineraries and travel corresponence from the 17th century, as well as the Swedish Humanist Olaus Magnus.
