Polar research at Stockholm University
The most comprehensive research programmes in Sweden on climate and the environment are based at Stockholm University. These programmes utilise both contemporary and historical data as well as promoting internationally outstanding environmental research on the world's eco-systems. This research is of crucial importance for the protection of our future climate, environment and health.
During International Polar Year scientists from Stockholm University led and participated in numerous expeditions. In addition to scientifically documenting their observations, researchers recorded experiences and impressions – both scientific and personal – in photographs and film. The researchers' videos, pictures and stories currently appear in one of Sweden's main tourist attractions, the ICEHOTEL.

International Polar Year
The polar regions are integral components of the Earth's system. Within them lie frontiers of knowledge as well as unique vantage points for science. Yet because of their remoteness and harsh Nature, the poles remain insufficiently studied.
With recent technological advances providing new scientific possibilities, and humankind's need for environmental knowledge and understanding increasing, the time was ripe for a co- ordinated international initiative for a major advance in polar science. With this aim, the In- ternational Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) organized an International Polar Year (IPY) in 2007-2008.
The fundamental concept of IPY 2007-2008 was a burst of internationally coordinated, inter- disciplinary research on the Earth's polar regions. The official observation period of the IPY was to be from 1 March 2007 until 1 March 2009. The IPY plans to exploit the intellectual resources and science assets of nations worldwide for major advances in polar knowledge and understanding, while leaving a legacy of new or enhanced observational systems, facilities and infrastructure. Arguably the most important legacies will be a new generation of polar scientists and engineers, as well as an exceptional level of interest and participation from polar residents, schoolchildren, the general public, and decision-makers worldwide.
