Philosophy

The research environment in philosophy is nationally outstanding and, in many areas, internationally prominent. This applies to research in both theoretical and practical philosophy.

In the field of philosophy, we study fundamental questions about reality, knowledge, consciousness, language and logic, as well as justice, values and moral conduct. Some questions have existed for thousands of years; others have arisen more recently.

Are there any objectively correct answers to moral questions? What ethical issues are raised in the latest biomedical research? What can we know about other people's spiritual life? If there is no sharp distinction between being tall and not being tall, how do we avoid contradiction? These are some of the questions being studied in the Department of Philosophy.

In theoretical philosophy, there is a special expertise in language and philosophy of mind, as well as in logic and philosophy of science. In practical philosophy, there are strong sub-areas in moral philosophy, including meta-ethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics – particularly medical ethics. Prominent research is also conducted in political philosophy and decision theory.

The department has an extensive international exchange programme. Research is conducted in both large and small project groups, nationally and internationally, often in collaboration with researchers in other disciplines. For example, in philosophy of language, there is an exchange with researchers in linguistics, psychology and computer science, while researchers in political philosophy collaborate with researchers in political science and economics. Research in medical ethics is conducted at the Centre for Healthcare Ethics, in an interdisciplinary collaboration between Stockholm University, Karolinska Institutet and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).
