Johan Rockström is rewarded for, among other things, his development of science-based concepts and action frameworks for politics, business and society. He is described as ”one of the great thinkers and communicators in the field of sustainable development”.

The award is worth altogether 500 000 euros, the biggest environmental prize in Europe. Earlier prize winners are among others the Nobel Laureate Paul Crutzen and former Soviet president Michail Gorbachev.
