Environmental policy
Stockholm University, located in the only urban national park in the world, is the biggest university in Sweden. Internationally prominent research and education related to the environment are conducted at the University in the scientific, social and interdisciplinary disciplines. The goal is to be the leader in education and research related to the environment and sustainable development.
In order to bring direct and indirect negative environmental impact to light and work in a structured manner to reduce this impact, Stockholm University complies with the standards provided in the generally accepted environmental management systems ISO 14001 (2004) and EMAS, which entail a commitment to continuous improvement of environmental performance.
Aimed at increasing positive environmental impact, Stockholm University must create awareness and commitment to environmental issues within the University and the local community.
In its endeavours towards continuous improvement, Stockholm University must:
- Facilitate consideration of all aspects related to the environment and sustainable development in all decisions taken at all levels and in every area.
- Cooperate actively with students, student unions, the local community and other stakeholders in those respects where the environment is affected and environmental management can be improved.
- Ensure that sufficient resources are allocated to the effort to achieve continuous improvements of environmental performance and that these resources are used in the most efficient way.
- Continuously review actions to reduce the use of natural resources and reduce emissions to air, soil and water caused directly or indirectly by University operations.
- Comply without exception with the laws and minimum standards applicable to all parts of University operations and, where possible, comply with higher standards.
- Ensure that all employees, regardless of form of employment, are aware of what structured environmental management involves and are given relevant training on these issues.
- Ensure that this policy is the basis for the University’s environmental objectives, that the policy is communicated to all employees and is easily accessible to the public and other stakeholders, such as students and partners, and that the policy is continuously revised by Stockholm University management to accurately reflect environmental objectives and ambitions.
The Environmental Policy will remain in force until 1 September 2015.
