Hollywood actor and Goodwill Ambassador to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UN CBD) Edward Norton has lent his voice to a new video explaining the challenges and opportunities that come with an increasingly urbanized planet.

  • ©THE World University Rankings 2013-2014 Stockholm University gains ground in world university rankings 2013-10-04 Stockholm University has once again strengthened its position in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In the latest ranking, published on 2 October, Stockholm University is placed 103, rising fourteen places from 2012.

  • Bert bolin puffbild Climate change: Bert Bolin and beyond 2013-09-27 Today, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will present the Working Group I contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report here in Stockholm. In honour of the late Bert Bolin, professor at Stockholm University, one of the founding fathers of the IPCC and its first chairman from 1988 to 1997, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, together with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Bolin Centre for Climate Research at Stockholm University and the IPCC are holding a symposium entitled Climate Change: Bert Bolin and Beyond. The event will be broadcast live 4-6pm on www.kva.se.
  • Honorary doctorates 2013 2013-09-26 Stockholm University has selected this year’s honorary doctors, who have all contributed in a distinctive way to the University's activities in research and education. They include Lennart Aspegren, prominent lawyer with an impressive career both in Sweden and abroad, and Mattias Klum, one the world's premier nature photographers. Furthermore, Tom Moring has been selected in the humanities and Frances Goldscheider, Lawrence W. Sherman and Bruce E. Wampold have been selected in the social sciences. In the natural sciences, in addition to already mentioned Mattias Klum, also Frances H Arnold, Jón Egill Kristjánsson, Øystein Hov and Peter Jenni have been selected. The expression may be overused but it is not out of place when it comes to summarising the feelings at Stockholm University after the inauguration of the new student building, Studenthuset. Studenthuset is now ready to receive both Stockholm University's 67,000 students and the general public. On 19 September, the Student House officially inaugurated by Governor Chris Heister.
  • Örjan Gustafsson, Professor of Biogeochemistry at ITM New insights into the Arctic permafrost carbon complexities 2013-08-29 Permafrost thawing and the release of carbon stored in it can generate greenhouse gases that, in turn, reinforce global warming. However, the extent of this reinforcing effect has been heatedly debated over the years. This week, in an article published as a Correspondence in Nature Geoscience, scientists from Stockholm University and Utrecht University highlight the need to broaden our perspective on the climate feedback potential of thawing Arctic permafrost. They particularly stress the role of the interplay between large-scale carbon- and water cycles in the Arctic permafrost carbon feedback.

Photo: Matthias Rieckh The battle for Sweden's highest peak 2013-09-16 Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest peak, has now reached its lowest level since measurements began in 1902. This result was discovered during the traditional measurement of Kebnekaise, carried out at the end of each summer season at Tarfala, Stockholm University's research centre. The south peak was measured at 2,099 metres above sea level; just 2.7 metres now separates the south peak from the north peak, which measures 2,096.3 metres.
  • Linda Molander, PhD student at ITM. New app to live toxic free 2013-09-13 Researchers at ITM have developed an app to inform and guide consumers through the maze of hazardous chemicals in popular consumer products.

  • Image: http://www.shanghairanking.com/ Stockholm University maintains top 100 position in global ranking list 2013-08-16 This year sees Stockholm University maintaining its position among the world's hundred highest ranked universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) list, published ​​by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This year Stockholm University is ranked 82 out of a total of 1000 institutions.

Kebnekaise record low 2013-08-13 In early August this year the south peak of Kebnekaise was measured from the Tarfala valley. Results show that the south peak is at its lowest yet recorded height, in a series of measurements dating back to 1968, as well as a number of previous surveys beginning in 1947.
  • Department of Advertising and PR merges with School of Business 2013-08-12 On 1 July 2013, the School of Business merged with the Department of Advertising and PR. The merger will mean that the Department of Advertising will relocate and join the Marketing section at the School in Kräftriket. Although the move is currently being planned, the Department will stay in their current premises throughout autumn term 2013.
  • Titan arum Giant flower in bloom in Bergius Botanic Garden 2013-07-10 A titan arum has flowered at the Bergius Botanic Garden. The plant is the "sibling" to the one that flowered in 2011, and the inflorescence is more than half a meter higher than the previous one, at 194 cm. When the titan arum flowered at the Bergius Botanical Garden in 2011 it created a sensation and attracted 7,000 visitors.

Worldwide, Stockholm University holds sixteenth place in these categories.

  • Vice-Chancellor Astrid Söderbergh Widding behind the controls of an excavator First sod turned for the Arrhenius Laboratory extension 2013-06-03 On 30 May, Vice-Chancellor Astrid Söderbergh Widding was behind the controls of a large excavator to turn the first sod for work to begin on the extension of the Arrhenius Laboratory at Frescati.
  • Where to find alternative study areas? 2013-05-31 The examination period is here and it is time to hand in group assignments and essays. Many students have contacted us to ask where they can sit and study, now that the library is disassembling and removing the seats from the study areas.
  • Foto: Eva Dalin Martin Flodén new deputy governor of the Riksbank 2013-05-23 The General Council of the Riksbank has today decided to appoint Martin Flodén, professor of economics at Stockholm University, and Cecilia Skingsley, chief economist at Swedbank, as new members of the Executive Board of the Riksbank. They succeed Lars E.O. Svensson and Barbro Wickman-Parak, whose periods of office expired on 20 May.
  • Stockholm University came out well in QS rankings 2013-05-10 According to the 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject, Stockholm University is among the world top 200 universities in 20 of the 30 subjects covered in the rankings.

  • Another step forward for Albano 2013-04-15 On 12 April, the County Administrative Board decided to either reject or dismiss all appeals filed regarding the local plan for Albano, which the City Council of Stockholm adopted in December.
  • New University Board 2013-04-15 The government has appointed new boards for the higher education institutions in Sweden for the period 1 May 2013 to 30 April 2016. Kerstin Calissendorff, Justice of the Supreme Court, is to become the new Chair of the Board for Stockholm University.

  • Reduce the risk of theft 2013-04-05 Recently, there have been several thefts in the University premises. Therefore, the Section for Safety and Security requests all students and staff to be extra alert and report thefts.
  • Five Wallenberg Academy Fellows to Stockholm University 2013-04-02 Today, five young successful researchers are appointed Wallenberg Academy Fellows with employment at Stockholm University. Martin Högbom and Jan Conrad will, as Wallenberg Academy Fellows, get the opportunity to continue their outstanding research at the University. Three of the appointees, ethics researcher Helen Frowe, biochemist David Drew and demographer Mikko Myrskylä, are internationally recruited researchers who will move to Stockholm University to conduct research.

  • Skiss från Nyréns Arkitektkontor Extension of the Arrhenius Laboratory about to start 2013-03-22 The University is in great need of space. The next major construction project to start in Frescati is the extension of buildings D and E with the new buildings N and P in the Arrhenius Laboratory, onto what is currently a car park. A smaller, detached auditorium (Q) with room for 100 people will also be built next to building E.
  • Crosstalks spreads on the web 2013-03-20 On 28 February, the second episode of the international academic talk show Crosstalks was broadcast on the web. Some of the most prominent researchers from Stockholm University and KTH were brought up against the following questions; Is physics changing our understanding of the world?, What is the ultimate destiny of man and robot?, and Global inequality and global health. Are we up to the challenge?
  • Avtalet med Hirosakiuniversitet undertecknas. Radiation biologists study health effects of Fukushima 2013-03-19 Radiation biologists at Stockholm University are cooperating with Japanese colleagues to study the health effects after the nuclear accident in Fukushima, two years ago.
  • Turkey in focus for new research institute 2013-03-12 Today, on 12 March, a new research institute was inaugurated at Stockholm University: SUITS, Stockholm University Institute for Turkish Studies. At the Institute, researchers will study Turkey as a country in a European and global context.
  • Renovation of toilets in Södra huset 2013-03-11 The University’s landlord, Akademiska Hus, will renovate all public toilets on level 3 (level 4 in the F-building) in Södra huset. The work will be carried out in four phases, and each phase takes about seven weeks. The project starts on Monday 18 March and is expected to be completed in November 2013.
  • Five new databases 2013-03-08 Until 7 April 2013, the Stockholm University Library has access to five new databases. These databases are source databases and contain original documents.
  • Göran Sandberg appointed chairman of SciLifeLab 2013-03-01 Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) is a large scale centre for life science research which has been run jointly by the Royal Institute of Technology, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. In the research bill of 2012, the government decided to invest an additional SEK 200 million per year in SciLifeLab. In connection with this investment, SciLifeLab becomes a national research institute.
  • Hans Adolfsson new Pro Vice-Chancellor as of 1 July 2013-02-25 On 20 February, the University Board appointed Professor Hans Adolfsson as Lena Gerholm’s successor as Pro Vice-Chancellor as of 1 July 2013.

Foto: Eva Dalin Astrid Söderbergh Widding: Strategic focus on partnerships and recruitment 2013-02-22 The tradition of openness and basic research guided by curiosity remains important for Stockholm University. Two other issues new Vice-Chancellor Astrid Söderbergh Widding addressed in her inaugural speech were the importance of recruiting strong candidates and developing strategic partnerships. She could also announce a concrete result of the University’s long-term collaboration efforts - a grant of SEK 100 million to the newly established Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre.

  • Provtagning till havs New research vessel in the Baltic Sea 2013-02-04 The Erling-Persson Family Foundation has given a grant of SEK 30 million to Stockholm University to build a new ice-going research vessel. The vessel will be stationed at Stockholm University’s marine field station, the Askö Laboratory, located in the archipelago of Trosa.

Foto: Eva Dalin Astrid Söderbergh Widding takes office as Vice-Chancellor 2013-02-01 Today, Astrid Söderbergh Widding takes office as Vice-Chancellor of Stockholm University - Sweden's largest university. The university world has been a theme throughout the career of film researcher Astrid Söderbergh Widding. After her doctoral studies, she became Professor in Cinema Studies at Stockholm in 2000. She has subsequently held positions as Head of Department, Deputy Dean and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Humanities and Social Sciences at the University. She has also been active in Turku and Paris.
  • Karin Bergmark appointed new Deputy Vice-Chancellor 2013-01-31 On 31 January, the Vice-Chancellor appointed Professor Karin Bergmark as Astrid Söderbergh Widding’s successor as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Humanities and Social Sciences and also Chair of the Board of Humanities, Law and Social Sciences.

A semester at Stockholm University adds value to Chinese life science degrees 2013-01-28 In late January eight life science students from Jilin University in China returned home after spending a semester of study at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

The Student Services will move there and they will offer various kinds of services to students. The building will also contain study areas, study rooms, an information desk, a café, a Student Union office and other student services.
  • A question of quality when Stockholm University invests in more female professors 2012-12-06 Stockholm University does not content itself with having the second highest proportion of female professors in the country. Therefore, the University invests SEK 15 million to increase the number of women by offering more time for research to female researchers, and for the recruitment of female guest professors.

  • Master’s Programme in International Commercial Arbitration Master’s Programme in International Commercial Arbitration Law top-ranked 2012-12-03 Stockholm University’s Master’s Programme in International Commercial Arbitration is ranked first among Master's programmes with a specialization in arbitration by the international arbitration law journal Global Arbitration Review, GAR.
  • solfysik liten Institute for Solar Physics to be established at Stockholm University 2012-12-19 With a Swedish telescope, researchers study the Sun from La Palma, the most north-westerly of the Canary Islands. As of 1 January 2013, the Institute for Solar Physics, which conducts the research, will be established at Stockholm University, which then takes over the running of the Institute from the Royal Academy of Sciences. The Institute will then also become a national research infrastructure under the Swedish Research Council. The takeover will mean several new research and PhD positions in solar physics.
  • Full activity inside the student building 2012-12-06 Earlier this autumn, the roof and walls were added to the new student building, Studenthuset. Not much is happening on the outside currently, but there is feverish activity on the inside.
  • Surplus allows for investments 2012-12-06 Stockholm University will have a positive financial result for 2012: SEK 67 million according to the projection.
  • Stockholm Resilience Centre part of the Board of Science 2012-12-06 When Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) was established in 2007 it was placed directly under the Vice-Chancellor, outside the faculty structure at Stockholm University. The University Board has now decided on the future organisation and placement of the SRC.
  • Library facilities to be adapted to new needs 2012-12-06 The work on the planned renovation of the University Library has been resumed. The renovation will probably begin in the summer of 2013 and is expected to take a year and a half.
  • Postdocs and sabbaticals part of internationalisation 2012-12-06 Stockholm University is investing SEK 105 million into internationalisation, which includes SEK 42.5 million to postdoctoral research fellowships. There will be 25 new two-year positions which anyone with a doctoral degree from a university outside of Sweden can apply for. The call for proposals covers subject areas within all faculties at the University.
  • Winner of Challenge Your Perspectives announced by Foreign Minister Carl Bildt in Washington 2012-11-29 Nine highly qualified students gathered at the Swedish Embassy in Washington for the Challenge Your Perspectives finals and awards ceremony. The winner of Stockholm University’s scholarship for a master’s in political science, Ognjen Zugic, and the other finalists met with Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and the 2012 US Nobel laureates.
  • Xiaodong Zou awarded the Arrhenius Plaque 2012-11-28 Xiaodong Zou, Professor of Structural Chemistry and Director at Berzelii Centre Exselent on Porous Materials at Stockholm University, has been awarded the Arrhenius plaque for her synthetic and structual studies of germanium contaning zoelite-like compounds. The Arrhenius plaque is awarded annually to individuals who have distinguished themselves through outstanding scientific research in chemistry and adjacent sciences. The award ceremony will be on 29 November at Kemicentrum in Lund.

  • Steve Murdoch awarded the 2013 Olof Palme Professorship 2012-11-01 The 2013 Olof Palme Professorship has been awarded to Steve Murdoch, Professor of History at the School of History, University of St. Andrews in Scotland. In Sweden, he will be based at the Centre for Maritime Studies at the Department of History at Stockholm University.
  • Important step for Albano 2012-10-26 Yesterday, the City Planning Committee decided to approve the local plan for Albano following a proposal from the City Planning Administration. The Committee will now submit the plan to the City Council for adoption. Thus, an important step has been taken towards the development of a new campus area, so that Stockholm University and KTH can develop and carry out both research and education in suitable premises. Vice-Chancellor Kåre Bremer welcomes the decision.
  • New Vice-Chancellor appointed at the University 2012-10-25 The Government has appointed Professor Astrid Söderbergh Widding as Vice-Chancellor at Stockholm University.
