  • Stockholm University Warning for phishing email 2012-05-14 A phishing email has been sent out to email users at Stockholm University today. The sender is Stockholm University and contains a link marked RESOLVE.
  • Stockholm University Problem with sending email to Hotmail accounts solved 2012-05-09 Microsoft has now revoked the previous block of our email servers. Users who experience problems sending email to Hotmail can report this by sending an email to helpdesk@it.su.se.
  • Stockholm University University's mail servers blocked by Hotmail 2012-05-02 The University's mail servers are currently blocked by Hotmail. IT Services has taken the necessary steps and made contact with them to get the block removed as soon as possible. Meanwhile, it will not work to send email to Hotmail addresses from your University email address.
  • International students at Stockholm University Rise in number of students accepted onto international master's programmes 2012-04-19 April saw the release of statistics for this year’s intake of students to the country’s international master’s degree programmes. Stockholm University saw a 10 per cent increase in international students being given places on master’s programmes, as compared to the figures for last year, 2011. A total of 628 students have been accepted onto one or other of the University’s over 70 master’s programmes, with 537 students being placed on the reserve list.
  • SciLifeLab is a collaboration between Stockholm University, the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Karolinska Institutet (KI) and Uppsala University. SciLifeLab provides technology and expertise in the fields of genomics, comparative genetics, proteomics, bioimageing and functional geonomics. Substantial investment in SciLifeLab 2012-04-17 On April 3, 2012, Minister for Education Jan Björklund announced during a press conference that SciLifeLab is to become a national resource for the life sciences in the broadest sense from 2013. The government's plan is that SciLifeLab will, within a few years, employ around 1,000 scientists, with a turnover of SEK 1 billion per year.

The Research Days (Forskardagarna) event will be held on October 3-4, 2012. The event is arranged to make current research accessible to the general public by presenting dissertations in a popular science format.

The book is available in Swedish New book about campus art and architecture 2012-04-16 This month sees the launch of a new book entitled "Configurations — Art and Architecture at Stockholm University". The book details the extensive collection of art owned by the University, as well as the highly diverse architecture that characterises the University's main campus at Frescati.
  • Publications by Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis Publications from Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis now more accessible 2012-04-13 The publishers Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis, AUS, publish scientific works for Stockholm University. When the agreement with the previous distributors ended the University Library took over distribution. It was also decided at that time that stockpiling of books would cease. Today all AUS books are printed on demand when they are ordered.

Photo: AstraZeneca Astra Zeneca decision hard blow to the University 2012-04-10 In early February came the news that Astra Zeneca is going to close down its research work in neuroscience in Södertälje. This will affect 1100–1200 research posts. In addition, some support functions will disappear.

  • Peter Brezezinski, professor in biochemistry SEK 38 million for internationalisation 2012-03-02 Stockholm University has made SEK 38 million available over two years to promote international research collaboration. The major portion of the funding will go into three new calls: invitations to attract internationally renowned guest researchers and post-doctoral fellows, travel grants for research-based activities and for linguistic support and funding for text translations. At the beginning of March the Vice-Chancellor decided which researchers would be awarded funding from the first round of application submissions.

Shrove Tuesday, as it is generally known in English-speaking countries, is the day when Swedes (and other Scandinavians) eat semla, a traditional pastry long associated with this day.
  • Tawny owl Owls to catch the University’s rats 2012-02-15 A new initiative to reduce the number of rats at the Frescati campus has been introduced by the setting up of nesting boxes for fifteen tawny owls. The hope is that the owls will become established at Frescati campus and help to naturally control rat and mouse numbers.

  • Stockholm University University mail servers no longer blocked by hotmail 2012-02-14 Update 2012-02-13: Earlier problems with Hotmail and University mail servers now resolved. The e-mail servers that were blocked by external email providers like Hotmail are now fully functional, and as of yesterday morning (10.55 am) users have been able send email to Hotmail addresses again.
  • Ceremony at City Hall Inauguration of new professors 2012-02-10 Stockholm University arranges a ceremony for the conferment of doctor's degrees and inauguration of new professors on Friday 28th September 2012. The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. in the Blue Hall of the Stockholm City Hall and will be followed by a banquet in the Gold Hall, with dancing in the Blue Hall.

  • Director of Berzelii Center EXSELENT Professor Xiaodong Zou New zeolite material may solve diesel shortage 2012-02-06 World fuel consumption is shifting more and more to diesel at the expense of gasoline. A recently published article in Nature Chemistry by a research team at Stockholm University and the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain presents a new porous material that evinces unique properties for converting gasoline directly into diesel. The material has a tremendously complex atomic structure that could only be determined with the aid of transmission electron microscopy.

Sven Lidström to spend a second winter in the Antarctic 2011-12-07 Stockholm University scientist Sven Lidström journeyed to the South Pole in November and he will remain there until December next year. A few years ago he became the second Swede in history to spend the winter at the South Pole and now it is time to spend just over another year at the Amundsen-Scott base.

    The University needs you! For the second year Stockholm University is to participate in the International Student Barometer. An invitation has been sent out to all international students currently studying at the University to participate in this important international survey. As well as giving students a chance to tell the University about their views and experience, students participating in the study will have the chance of winning a cash prize of €1,000, equivalent to around SEK 11,000. International students are asked to check their email where they should find an message containing a link to the survey.
  • Elizabeth Haub Prize awarded to Alan Boyle 2011-12-06 The Elizabeth Haub Prize jury has decided to award Professor Alan Boyle at the University of Edinburgh the 2011 Elizabeth Haub Prize for environmental law in recognition of his extraordinary efforts in the international environmental rights area. The prize is one of the most prestigious in the world in the area of environmental rights and is awarded by the Faculty of Law at Stockholm University. www.juridicum.su.se/ehp
  • Maintenance work at the Arrhenius Laboratory 2011-12-06 In connection with the refurbishment of Arrhenius Laboratory, Akademiska Hus has decided that the external concrete structure is in need of attention. Some of the pillars and supporting beams are showing signs of fissures caused by alkali-silica reactions with subsequent frost cracking. As a first step in the maintenance work a number of the concrete beams will be supported by steel pillars. The work began in November. The operations that are affected by the repairs have been contacted. The workplace as a whole is still safe and lectures and research should be able to continue with a minimum of disturbance.
  • Patrik Lindenfors, Fredrik Jansson, Mikael Sandberg Democratization takes place in rapid leaps 2011-12-05 Democratization is often viewed as a slow process. Now, researchers at Stockholm University have analyzed all transitions to democracy that have ever occurred. This research shows that in reality, democratization is a rapid process. In half of all cases it has taken less than 2.4 years to go from dictatorship to democracy, and in nearly a quarter of the cases the process took place overnight.
  • Stockholm University New email addresses for university administration staff 2011-11-16 The University Director decided, as of April 28, 2011, that all staff within the University’s central administration should be given new simplified email addresses, ending in @su.se. The purpose of this change is to create a more uniform structure for e-mail addresses, while reducing the administrative cost of subdomains.
  • Turnitin Turnitin — the University's text-matching tool 2011-11-14 From September 2011 Stockholm University has a new text-matching tool called Turnitin. After detailed testing of text-matching systems the new service was chosen to be used by the University.
  • Stockholm University Vice-Chancellor presents Global Vision at Tsinghua University, Beijing 2011-11-14 Stockholm University Vice-Chancellor Kåre Bremer is to speak on under the heading Global Vision and new horizons from the land of the midnight sun and Nobel Prize. The speech will take place in the Reception Hall of the Main Building at Tsinghua University in Beijing on November 15, 2011, starting at 2 pm local time.
  • Photo: ArildV/Wikipedia. 10 new honorary doctors for 2011 2011-10-24 In April this year Stockholm University announced the recipients of Honorary Doctorates for 2011, to be awarded to ten internationally outstanding figures within the areas of science, the humanities, the social sciences and law. The honorary degrees were awarded on Friday 30 September 2011, during the inauguration and graduation ceremony that took place in the beautiful surroundings of Stockholm City Hall. New doctoral graduates and Jubilee Doctors were awarded degrees during the ceremony, which also saw the inauguration of new professors to the University.

During the 1950s Tomas Tranströmer read literature and poetics at Stockholm University College, which in 1960 became Stockholm University.

Dubbed "Scandinavia's first centre for expatriates", the recently formed Global Expat Partners will offer services and networking possibilities in a new premises in central Stockholm.

  • Green peas Green Peas - a new restaurant on campus 2011-08-22 Green Peas is the name of the new lunch restaurant that opened this week at Stockholm University's main campus at Frescati. The new restaurant is located in the Natural Science Student's building, Gröna Villan, between Geovetenskapens hus and the Arrhenius Laboratories.
  • Stockholm University Water leaks in Geovetenskapenshus (Geo-Science Building) 2011-08-22 A water leak was discovered on Saturday, August 20, in Geovetenskapenshus at Frescati. The leak was stopped, but during Monday parts of the building will be without power and several servers will continue to be out of action. Refrigerators and freezers in the building are understood to be intact.

The spread of dangerous chemicals in our everyday environment could lead to a global human catastrophe.
  • Stockholm University Scheduled maintenance affecting all IT services 11-12 July 2011 2011-07-05 Scheduled maintenance of the University's basic communications structure will take place between 12.00 GMT+1, Monday 11 July and Tuesday 12.00 GMT+1 12 July, (work may continue into the afternoon of July 12 if required). The work will affect all services, including network traffic. This means shorter periods of disruption can occur whilst maintenance work is in progress and that the network may not be entirely accessible during the whole of the maintenance period.

The Kings Medal to Stockholm University professors 2011-06-15 Two professors at Stockholm University were this week awarded H.M. The King's Medal for significant contributions to Swedish research. Professor Brita Bergman of the Department of Linguistics and Professor Lars Bergström, Director of the Oskar Klein Centre, were awarded the medal at a ceremony that took place at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on June 14, 2011.

Sarnecki came to Sweden in 1968, where he earned a PhD in sociology at Stockholm University.
  • Stockholm Criminology Symposium 2011 Stockholm Criminology Symposium 2011 2011-07-07 The 2011 Stockholm Criminology Symposium took place June 13-15. The symposium which was held in the Norra Latin conference room at the City Conference Centre in Stockholm, brought together leading criminologists from all over the world, who gathered to meet and discuss their work.

Exploding star shines brighter 2011-06-17 Researchers at Stockholm University have studied the exploding star Supernova 1987A. In an article published in Nature, they present findings that show, among other things, that the supernova has entered a new phase of shining ever more brightly.

  • Stockholm University Initiative has resulted in more female professors 2011-04-08 In 2006 the Vice-Chancellor introduced an initiative by which female associate professors with tenure positions could advance their qualifications and improve their possibilities of being promoted to professor. The 17 female associate professors who participated in the initiative received a total of SEK 9.6 million divided among them to advance their research merits. Funding was awarded for periods of between 12 and 24 months. At the end of 2008, when this period had expired, seven of the associate professors had been promoted and in the intervening period from then to the present day a further eight have become professors. The remaining two have moved to work for other employers and now work at other universities.

Each grant will cover the cost of bringing leading international guest researchers and post-docs to Stockholm University, as well as also covering for research activities and foreign language support.
