Today, the government adopted an ordinance which governs the management and activities of SciLifeLab. Among other things, the ordinance determines that the government shall appoint the chairman of the board and one member of the board who shall represent the business community.

As a result of this, the government has appointed Professor Göran Sandberg as chairman of SciLifeLab. Sandberg is a professor of plant physiology. He has previously been Vice-Chancellor at Umeå University and he is currently the Executive director of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

The government has also appointed Margareta Olsson Birgersson, medical director of the pharmaceutical company Roche, as a member of the board.

Sandberg and Olsson Birgersson have been appointed for the period from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2016. Other board members are appointed by the Royal Institute of Technology, in consultation with the three other universities which are the main stakeholders in the institute.
