The project “Interconnected quality (IQ) control – role in organelle structure-function, aging and longevity assurance” deals with the issue of cellular ageing.

“The main question we want to answer is how ageing impacts on the wiring between the organelles of the cell, says Claes Andréasson, Associate Professor and fellow applicant of the project.

The project is a collaborative effort between three investigators at Stockholm University that have joined forces with Professor Thomas Nyström and Assistant Professor Johanna Höög, University of Gothenburg. All researchers use the model organism budding yeast to study fundamental cellular processes related to ageing. Claes Andréasson is interested in how cells manage toxic misfolded proteins via quality control processes and Sabrina Büttner focuses her research on regulatory processes of ageing.

The grant sum of SEK 44 700 000 over five years was the highest among all the projects awarded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation in 2017.

“This project will give us the opportunity to establish a strong research collaboration between Stockholm University and University of Gothenburg and will provide valuable resources to The Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner Gren Institute”, says Claes Andréasson.

MBW congratulates Claes Andréasson and Sabrina Büttner on receiving this award!
