The role of the translational initiation factor IF1 in E. coli
The role of the translational initiation factor IF1 in E. coli is studied by using mutants in the factor and their interactions with particular suppressor mutations in ribosomal RNA.
The factor IF1 has been used to create strains with a totally stable plasmid that does not require antibiotic selection for maintenance. Such strains are designed to overproduce certain organic substances in industrial scale.
