Didem Oral is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Sociology. She was awarded a PhD in Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. In her PhD Thesis “Peace Movements in Militaristic Societies: Israel and Turkey as Unidentical Twins” 
she looked at how political opportunity structures shape peace movements’ characteristics in these two different countries.

During her PhD, she had the opportunity to work on her research as a Visiting Research Scholar at Stockholm University, Graduate Center at the City University of New York, Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She holds a MRes degree from the European University Institute, a MA degree in Social Sciences from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and BA degrees in Political Science& International Relations and Sociology from Bogazici University, Istanbul. 
 

Forskning

Didem Oral's research interests include social movements, migration, militarism, gender, state-society relations, Kurdish Question in Turkey, political consumerism, Israeli politics& society and qualitative research methods. Currently, she is working on the interdisciplinary project “Teaching that Matters for Migrant Students: Understanding Levers of Integration in Scotland, Finland and Sweden”  (TEAMS) funded by Nordforsk. In particular, the TEAMS project examines how teachers, schools and education system facilitate migrant integration in schools to identify educational practices and structural conditions that facilitate opportunities for migrants’ academic success, cross-socialization and how they develop a sense of belonging in their school communities.
