Forskning

My research interests lie within the fields of usage-based and cognitive-functional linguistics. In particular, I am interested in the semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistcs of pronouns, person forms and other referential devices in spoken discourse and the contrastive study of Spanish and Portuguese varieties. In my future research, I am planning to examine the intricate relationship between language and gender in different varieties of Spanish.

At present, I am working on two different research projects. One of them examines the constructionalization of sequences used to introduce quoted speech in Peninsular and Argentinean Spanish (with my colleague Andrea Pešková). The other project focuses on the grammaticalization of the noun phrase uma pessoa 'a person' into a referential device in European Portuguese.

My previous research has focused on the expression of pronominal subjecs and the pragmatics of different verb-subject combinations in spoken Spanish and Portuguese. I defended my PhD dissertation entitled Subject pronouns in Spanish and Portuguese: Semantics, pragmatics, and formulaic sequences at the University of Helsinki in 2012. Before moving to Stockholm in 2016, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Salamanca, Berlin Humboldt University, University of Cologne and Ghent University. In my postdoctoral research project Human impersonals in Spanish and Portuguese: towards a usage-based account (2014-2016) I examined the various ways of expressing unspecified human reference in discourse.

In addition to the above-mentioned research areas, I am interested in language teaching and my publications include a grammar of Spanish and Portuguese for second language learners. See my full list of publication in the upper-right corner of this page.

The present investigation deals with the variable use of referential devices expressing generic or speaker-oriented reference in a corpus of sociolinguistic interviews where Spanish informants talk about their studies and work experience. The analysis focuses on impersonal second person singulars (2SG-imp), which are compared with the first person singular (1SG) and plural (1PL), uno ‘one’ and reflexive-based impersonal constructions. Quantitative analysis shows that age, gender and familiarity between the speakers are significant factors in accounting for the inter-speaker variation. There is a negative correlation between age and 2SG-imp usage and a positive correlation between age and 1PL usage, and female speakers use both constructions more than men. I discuss the relation of the choice of referring expressions and the expression of intersubjectivity in the interviews. Qualitative analysis of the interview content suggests that there is a connection between the choice of referential devices and generational differences in the choice of individual vs. collective perspective and the inclusion of the addressee.
