L2 motivation research has a longstanding monolingual bias. Not only do models have an underlying monolingual logic, but in empirical research a disproportionate focus has been directed to English, research often taking place in settings characterized by study authors as monolingual. In this talk I will offer a conceptualization of motivation to learn languages other than English that is informed by research in the multilingual paradigm, and will discuss the implications for modern language learning and teaching.
