Carbon offsets for the University´s air travel

Stockholm University will offset carbon emissions from air travel on official business between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2019.

Approved by the Vice-Chancellor 20.11.2014. Reg. no. FV-2.10.1-3105-14.

Responsible unit: Technical Support Office

The Vice-Chancellor has decided that Stockholm University will offset carbon emissions from air travel on official business between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2019. Carbon emissions are offset through investments into CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) projects, approved by the UN’s CDM Executive Board, while considering the social aspects of sustainable development (Gold Standard).

The carbon offset fee will be added automatically to the price when booking a ticket through BCD Travel, and will thus be paid for by whoever is paying for the flight. The carbon offset fee is SEK 118 for a one-way trip. It has been calculated so that the total revenue will offset the University’s total carbon emissions from air travel. The uniform fee means that shorter flights carry a relatively high cost compared to longer flights. This supports the University’s aim of increased internationalisation and the meeting and travel policy’s goal to replace business travel with travel-free meetings as much as possible. Stockholm University’s instructions for climate-friendly travel and travel-free meetings recommend travelling by train instead of by air for journeys shorter than 500 km, and considering the possibility of travelling by train for journeys longer than 500 km.
