Elio Brancaforte is Associate Professor in the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies at Tulane University, New Orleans, USA. He is the author of the monograph Visions of Persia: Mapping the Travels of Adam Olearius as well as of several articles on European travelers to Safavid Iran. As a result of spending the spring semester 2015 teaching at Baku State University on a Fulbright grant, he is currently preparing a book entitled Europe Discovers Iran and Azerbaijan: Dutch and German Representations of the Safavid Empire (1635-1712) which examines the travel accounts of Adam Olearius, Engelbert Kaempfer, Jan Janszoon Struys, and Cornelis de Bruyn. In 2017 he will be an Academic Visitor at the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford and a Keeley Fellow at Wadham College.

The event is collaboratively organized by Livrustkammaren, Äldretextseminariet at Stockkolm University and Institutionen för baltiska och slaviska språk, finska, nederländska och tyska.
