Archaeology is the largest discipline represented in the department in terms of staff, enrolled students, PhD students and doctoral theses. It is focussed on the history of humans from the Lower Palaeolithic to modern times, with particular focus on conditions in the Nordic region. Characteristic of the research environment is an intense and continuous discussion on the relationship between material culture and interpretation. Power, ideology, ethnicity, gender, ritual, mentality and cultural encounters are frequent issues in many of the publications produced within this discipline.
