Monday lecture by:
Nicola Spakowski, Professor of Sinology, University of Freiburg

China is ruled by a Communist party which to this day holds to “socialism with Chinese characteristics”. At the same time, the Chinese Communist Party has largely abandoned
Marxism and Maoism and created ideological concepts that reflect the need to legitimize shifting approaches in the reform of China. This talk will address the function of ideology in today’s China, identify and explain the major ideological shifts that occurred since 1978, and assess the success and failure of the “signature ideologies” of successive party leaders, from Deng Xiaoping’s “Four Modernizations” to Xi Jinping’s “Chinese Dream”.
