Understanding Issues of Contemporary Korean Literature and Culture through Traditional Literary Patterns

In today’s globalizing world with growing international contacts the importance of understanding cultural specifics as well as the diversity of approaches and interpretations depending on the cultural background can hardly be overestimated. In the case of Korean culture, literature and text itself are attributed a special importance. Many behavioral patterns may be found in literature and most of them trace their roots to traditional texts.

The lecture will examine traditional models found in contemporary Korean prose and poetry. They will be classified according to their function as a tool for understanding 1) a fragment or a key moment of a text 2) composition of a text 3) text in general. The texts to be examined belong to South Korea’s most prominent and well-known writers, and the works chosen mostly deal with issues important for 20th-21rst century readers: democracy, industrialization, war, social problems, gender relations, ecology, relations with North Korea, Tokto issue, etc.

Through the lense of tradition literature, the lecture also intends to explain elements of the traditional perception of the world that help understand a cultural phenomenon or tendency in contemporary culture (e.g. elements of corporate culture or certain social projects).
