Korean Studies Section EPEL seminars spring term 2015

The Korean Studies Section cordially invites you to the guest lecture by

Antonetta Bruno (Università di Roma "La Sapienza")

In the context of the globalization it may seem incongruous to speak of shamanism as a significant phenomenon in such a highly developed, industrial nation as Korea.

People who associate shamanism with "primitive culture" will be surprised to discover that the rituals of the shamans are very much in demand because many people consider them an effective way to cope with material and spiritual needs of modern society. Consequently shamans still play an active role in Korea. Mediating between the world of gods and ancestors and that of man, they perform rituals to resolve all kinds of problems and bring people happiness, health and affluence in their present life.

A general introduction of Korean shamanism will be followed by a case study on Transaction with the realm of spirits in modern Korea.
