Korean Studies Section EPEL seminars spring term 2015

The Korean Studies Section cordially invites you to the guest lecture by

Inna Tsoi (Sankt Petersburg State University)

“The March of Fools” in Literature and Cinema (1970s)

The lecture will discuss the Korean literature during the 1970s with a particular focus on Choi Inho’s (1945-2013) novel and screenplay “The March of Fools” (1974). These works by Choi Inho are vivid examples of how the boundaries between Korean literature and cinema crumbled and interaction between the two fields increased. The novel and screenplay are set in the time when military dictatorship ruled in Korea but also when the birth of democracy took place.  It was also a period of industrialization and modernization in Korean society. Like most of Choi Inho’s novels in that period, “The March of Fools” depicted the youth culture of the 1970s and their dream of freedom and a new life.
