The Korean model of development has been praised as one of the most successful ways through which a poor authoritarian country can achieve economic development and democracy together. Since the mid-2000s, however, the country has experienced a return of authoritarian politics with a staggering economic performance. And the most recent political scandal of President Park in 2016 has revealed some entrenched problems of Korean model development in the most dramatic way. This talk aims to provide some critical reflections on recent developments in South Korea after summarizing positive assessments of Korean model of development.
