This presentation aims to provide some insights into the discourse on modern Hong Kong literature. Leading questions of the presentation will be: How do Hong Kong writers and literary theorists themselves define Hong Kong literature? Are there strategies for Hong Kong literature to ‚go global‘, and if so, which actors are involved?
Another focus of the lecture is on the reception of Hong Kong literature in European countries and in an English language context. As a scholar interested in Hong Kong literature and as a translator I will posit the following questions: Which literary genres are being rendered into European and English-language contexts and how might the international readership of Hong Kong literature be enlarged?
