The next chapter for the Tellus journal: Insights from the relaunch Tellus Symposium 2025

On May 26–27, researchers gathered at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm to mark a major milestone: the 75th anniversary of Tellus, a journal with deep roots in Earth system science. Organized by the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the event brought together guests to celebrate the journal’s legacy and discuss what lies ahead as Tellus relaunches as a unified, interdisciplinary journal.

With its origins dating back to 1948 and a strong tradition in atmospheric sciences, dynamic meteorology, and oceanography, Tellus is now moving into its next phase. The symposium served as both a celebration and a working meeting for shaping that future.

A programme grounded in science and community

The two-day event featured a full programme of research talks highlighting key developments in Earth system science. Many speakers reflected on topics connected to the upcoming Tellus Jubilee issue, drawing links between foundational work published in Tellus and current challenges in the field.

One of the most engaging parts of the event was the closing panel discussion, where senior editors and researchers took part in an open conversation about the role of scientific journals today.

Ilona Riipinen reflected on the values that drive meaningful scientific publishing: “We often speak about research being interesting or important—but I would add learning as a key value,” she said. “We are professionals in learning. What did you learn that you think others should know as well?” She emphasized that individual learning becomes collective learning when shared through thoughtful publication.

Tellus is an ethical choice

added Stefano Manzoni. “That message really resonated when we reached out to new editors.”

Several panelists emphasized the need for journals to foster transparency, clarity, and meaningful dialogue within the research community—not just to communicate findings, but to support trust in science more broadly.

We need to be a space where debate is possible

said Fabien Roquet. “Not just about consensus, but also about where the frontiers are.”

We show our scepticism and gain authority through that

added Bjorn Stevens. “It’s about being honest and clear.”

There was also discussion around practical ideas: open peer review, better communication around uncertainty, and building a journal culture that scientists can feel proud to be part of.

Moving forward

The symposium marked a clear step forward for the renewed Tellus, as it moves to a new platform with an updated name, scope, and editorial structure. While the format is evolving, the journal's core commitment remains: to foster a publishing environment rooted in scientific integrity, transparency, and community. The event closed with a shared call to uphold the values that define good science—rigor, openness, and collaboration.
