Abstract: In recent decades, historians have shown increasing interest in the role of the networks of the royal families' of medieval Scandinavia, but we still know relatively little about how other members of the royal kindreds contributed to the exercise of royal power. In this talk I will draw on my forthcoming biography of King Valdemar I the Great (r. 1157-1182) of Denmark to explore this topic. I will focus on the tragic career of Valdemar's cousin (and later rival) Duke Buris of Slesvig and explore the way in which Buris' widespread family, the sons of his formidable mother Ingrid Ragnvaldsdotter, tied together the Scandinavian kingdoms.
