Science education and gender

An introduction to gender theory as well as an introduction to critical studies of science, where learners will engage in co-development of knowledge through peer-to-peer learning. The course prepares participants for thinking about gender moving beyond a focus on only women to multiple genders and gendering practices.

The course is primarily aimed at supporting the professional development of university teachers from the faculty of Science, but teachers from all disciplinary areas are welcome to participate. Participants need to have have previously completed training in higher education teaching, UL1 or equivalent. The course corresponds to two weeks of studies (equivalent to 3 credits).

 

Course content and structure

The aim of the course is to illuminate how gender intersects with science practices and the teaching and learning of science. The seminars will work through different ways in which gender dimensions impact science education.

In the course we will discuss contemporary research on gender and science education, which will prepare participants for designing research-informed teaching practices with a consideration to gender and other categories of difference.

The course will run over eight consecutive weeks starting the week of February 12th. The course includes four 2 hour on campus meetings, consisting of combination of presentations and other activities. The course is equivalent to two weeks of study, i.e. 3 ECTS credits. Course language is English.

During the course you will:

  • Be introduced to gender theory and perspectives on gender and identity in science education research.
  • Read and discuss contemporary research in the field of gender and science education.
  • Plan for developments of your own teaching practice, based on the research covered in the course.

Participation is free of charge for all employees at Stockholm University. Your application is processed within a few working days and you will receive a message through the signup system with notification on course seat. Your registration is binding, in case of cancellation later than four befor course start your department will be debited a cancellation fee of 2 000 SEK. By signing up you confirm that your registration is approved by the Head of (your) Department or equivalent.
