The Professional development course 3—Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (UL3) has been designed for university lecturers at Stockholm university from alla academic areas interested in developing their competence in educational research and carrying out an educational study within the own discipline. Previously completed training in higher education teaching, corresponding to the higher education pedagogic courses UL1 and UL2 is a merit in the selection of course participants.

 

About the course

During the course you carry out an in-depth pedagogical development project with the support of a supervisor from CeUL. You may already have material that you need support in developing and processing, such as the work you completed during the UL2 course. The course project can be carried out individually, but forming a project together with two or more colleagues from the same department is an advantage.

The aim of the course is to contribute to professional development within the area of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. After completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify a relevant educational question in your discipline based on published research.
  • Formulate a research aim and research questions for a study that is relevant to teaching and learning in your discipline.
  • Carry out a discipline-based educational study where the research methods and analysis are chosen with respect to the research aim and research ethics.
  • Present your study in a suitable form (conference presentation, research paper, etc.)
 

Course content and structure

The course is based around carrying out a discipline-based educational study, relevant to your role as a university lecturer.  The study should build on earlier research. The choice of topic is made in consultation with one of the course leaders. The course starts with a mandatory full seminar day on campus, followed by two half-day seminars. After this, the participants are divided into groups led by a supervisor which meet regularly during the spring term. During the autumn, three seminars are held, the last of consists of a mini-conference where the course participants' present their work.

The course is the equivalent of 5 weeks of full-time study (7.5 ECTS credits). The course consists of five mandatory course seminars, own project work and supervision meetings. The course is offered once a year.

Terms and conditions: Participation is free of charge for all employees at Stockholm University. Your application is processed within a few working days and you will receive a message through the signup system. After beiing accepted to the course your registration is binding. In case of cancellation later than four weeks before course start your department will be debited a cancellation fee of 2 000 SEK. By signing up you confirm that your registration is approved by the Head of (your) Department or equivalent.

Venue / Find your way to: the first and last seminar are full days (10—15) held on campus, the seminars inbetween are half days held online (at 13—16). Link to schedule

Language:  Bilingual: Swedish and English. The course group will probably be bilingual and include both teachers who prefer to discuss in Swedish and teachers who are not able to discuss in Swedish.

Course certificate: Course seminars are mandatory. Participants who complete course tasks and gain a pass will be entitled to a certificate. CeUL courses are not registered in Ladok.
