Welcome to a workshop on teaching and learning with Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL).

This workshop is aimed for Postgraduate/research supervisors. This workshop will be especially interesting to novice supervisors who are supervising doctoral students.

About the workshop

Research supervision is steeped in power relations. As a supervisor, you need to assess, give feedback to, and support a PhD student who also contributes to your own advancement and career. This relationship creates dynamic and sometimes challenging situations. As a supervisor, however, you are also likely to be a very important factor in how your student develops his/her own research integrity and learns to approach broader research ethical issues.

During this session, we discuss various ethical dilemmas that may arise in connection with research supervision and how we as supervisors can address these. The emphasis of the discussion is not primarily on the regulations but around the grey area that is unregulated and which is often perceived as the most problematic.
