This course is focused on oral presentations and poster presentations of chemistry research for PhD students. The goal of the course is to become proficient in designing graphical elements and how to deliver short and focused presentations that both capture attention and convey a message efficiently, and how to tailor this to different audiences.

The class will be entirely on-site at the Arrhenius laboratories, since it’s imperative to train not only talk contents, but also how we stand, interact and deliver talks & posters physically.

Physical attendance is mandatory, so if you cannot make these dates or fall ill, you will unfortunately need to take the class next time.

All participants will prepare a poster on their own research and present for the other participants, and we will organize peer-to-peer feedback on poster design and presentation techniques.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, the participants are expected to understand the following:

  • General principles for oral presentations
  • How to do an interesting poster pitch that will attract poster visitors
  • How to prepare an interesting poster and other graphical elements
  • How to discuss your research with people inside and outside your field of expertise
  • How to discuss chemistry with poster presenters

Examination criteria (pass or fail)

To pass the course, you need to:

  • Participate in all scheduled activities (two days, 5 assignments)
  • Briefly present why your poster is important to the other participants (“poster pitch”)
  • Prepare a poster of your research according to the instructions
  • Present your poster to other participantsDiscuss posters by other participants
