BEAM gets an extra year!

What we definitely know, is that BEAM has been funded also for 2015, the year between the formal end of the initial project and the decision on whether the funds will become permanent.

The BEAM Steering Group has also had its mandate prolonged until the end of 2015, and has decided that some positions financed by BEAM will continue into 2015. It has also decided to continue supporting the work on a Baltic Health Index. This project is led by BEAM’s network coordinator Thorsten Blenckner, SRC, in cooperation with The Baltic Sea Centre and Ben Halpern’s group at UC Santa Barbara that developed the Ocean Health Index.

Funding available for 2015

About 5 MSEK of BEAM funds for 2015 are still not committed to a specific purpose. The BEAM Steering Group has decided to invite applications for economic support from this source for three purposes:

  • To bring current BEAM projects to a successful end. Applications that increase the output of  scientific publications from BEAM during  the coming year will be given priority.
  • Smaller sums for planning of research applications, either to external funders or, if SU keeps the BEAM funds, to the Baltic Sea Centre. Planning of projects that  agree with BEAM objectives, i.e. Baltic Sea Research on environmental management  and/or of an interdisciplinary character will be given priority.
  • To fund new projects that agree with BEAM objectives, i.e. Baltic Sea Research on environmental management  and/or of an interdisciplinary character. Projects that can be finished in a year will be given priority.

Previous BEAM support is not required in the two latter cases

Applications should be sent to ragnar.elmgren@su.se and should be of about 2 pages (size A4) plus a short C.V. for the applicant, and should be received by noon, January 15, 2015. The Steering group will inform applicants whether the application has been funded by the end of February, at the latest.
