Project start: Spring 2021

Plant leaves host many different microbes, among which fungi are particularly abundant. Foliar fungi play an important role in regulating plant health, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. These fungal communities may be highly sensitive to anthropogenic activities, e.g. urbanization. However, to what extent urban features influence fungal communities is largely unknown.

In this project, the master student will investigate the effects of urbanization (e.g. CO2 emissions and air quality) and city microclimate (e.g. urban heat islands) on the oak foliar fungal community.

The master student will have the opportunity to do fieldwork across Stockholm, to learn molecular techniques and statistical analysis of microbial communities.
