The Finnish-Swedish Archaeological and Mapping Project in Mesopotamia (FSAPM), Turkey
In 2015-2016 the Finnish-Swedish Archaeological Project in Mesopotamia (FSAPM) initiated a pilot study of a virtually unexplored area in northern Mesopotamia in the Tūr Abdin region, the present-day Mardin Province in south-eastern Turkey. The project is reliant on satellite image data sources for prospecting, identifying, recording, and mapping largely unknown ancient military sites in the border zone of Rome and Persia, which constituted the eastern limes of the Roman empire in late antiquity and the early Byzantine period. The purpose of the project was to record and document the sites in this area for saving the endangered cultural heritage, but also to explore how the little-known military organisation of the Roman and early Byzantine frontier was organized in this period. In short, some of the new and surprising results will be shared.
